11.34

論解聲聞三品，「若時安住下品成熟，爾時便有下品欲樂、下品等，乃至第三、即於現法得般涅槃」者，此中下品，准猶墮惡趣，即中下忍以前。中品即於現身得果證，不隨惡趣，即增上忍以去人；若以前人，無惡趣業，不墮惡趣，即於現見身得果者，亦是此中收。此中且約七生人得為論，故云非於現法得般涅槃。若約增上四生乃至六十劫為修習者，即於現身亦入涅槃，不作此論。若異此者，第三人皆為有餘人，應准知。此初人若准下品菩薩，即合見道以前皆是。今准文義皆不然，故別說。其獨覺中必取阿那含果；或已百劫修習滿訖，起三十六心，趣獨覺果等。如《對法抄》。

The treatise explains the three grades of śrāvakas: "When one abides in lower-grade maturation, at that time one has lower-grade desire and aspiration, lower-grade [application], and so on, up to the third: attaining parinirvāṇa in this very life." Here, regarding the lower grade, it is inferred that one may still fall into the bad destinies, meaning those prior to intermediate and lower patience (kṣānti). The intermediate grade refers to those who attain realization of the fruit in the present body and do not follow the bad destinies, meaning persons from superior patience onwards; if there are persons of the former stage who have no karma of the bad destinies and do not fall into the bad destinies, and who attain the fruit in the presently visible body, they are also subsumed here. Here, the discussion is provisional in terms of persons of seven births, and therefore it is said that they do not attain parinirvāṇa in this very life. If one discusses those who cultivate for superior four births up to sixty aeons, they enter nirvāṇa in the present body as well; this discussion does not treat that. Otherwise, the third person would all be persons with residue; this should be understood accordingly. If this first person were evaluated according to the lower-grade bodhisattva, it would include everyone prior to the path of seeing. Now, according to the meaning of the text, this is not the case, and so it is stated separately. Among pratyekabuddhas, they necessarily attain the fruit of anāgāmin; or having completed cultivation for a hundred aeons, they give rise to the thirty-six minds and proceed to the fruit of pratyekabuddha, and so forth, as in the *Duifa chao* (*Notes on the Abhidharmasamuccaya*).
