In the Treatise, explaining the second mark, it says: 'Furthermore, bodhisattvas speak the Dharma in accordance with principle for sentient beings, namely for those who delight in practicing evil conduct, in order to make them abandon all evil conduct, by means of corresponding phrases, companionship, conformity, clear resonance, utility, proportionality, following constant and attentive [application], and the dharmas of the provisions of the factors [of enlightenment]'; 'corresponding' means corresponding to principle. 'Phrases' refers to characters, and 'sentences' refers to clauses generated from characters. 'Companionship' refers to the meaning within the phrases. 'Conformity' means conforming to the undefiled path. 'Clear resonance' means harmonious and elegant. 'Utility' means capable of abandoning evil. 'Proportionality' means preaching the Dharma in accordance with the ailment. 'Following constant and attentive [application]' means conforming to constant and attentive cultivation. 'The dharmas of the provisions of the factors' refers to the dharmas that are provisions of the factors of enlightenment, not other factors. The meaning here is that with phrases and meanings that accord with principle, with a harmonious and elegant voice, conforming to the undefiled path, which are dharmas of the provisions conforming to enlightenment, one speaks them for sentient beings who delight in practicing evil conduct; this is the intended meaning here.
