The treatise says: "Furthermore, the sound dhātu also has retribution, but sound is not." The Great Master says: Because the seeds of sound are constantly continuous, the sound dhātu is retribution; because the active manifestation is interrupted and ceases, it is not called retribution. Master Jing says: Sound is emitted from seven places, and the seven places are called the sound dhātu, which is retribution. Now this should not be so; the seven places are seven retributions, because among the twenty-two faculties the seeds of the faculties are all retribution. Sound here should also be understood accordingly, as explained in the previous fascicle. "Dhātu" means cause, which is the four great elements that produce sound. These great elements are produced by retribution, whereas sound is not retribution; this corresponds to the third transmitted sound, because sound is produced from retribution.
