In the question and answer regarding how the eye and consciousness, being cause and effect, can be simultaneous, why is this so? The eye and consciousness are not direct productive causes (janaka-hetu), but merely establishing causes. Master Jayasena: This text proves that seeds and actualized states arise at different times, as in the case of not being direct productive causes. The faculty does not produce consciousness simultaneously; it is an establishing cause, which can arise simultaneously; thus we know that direct productive causes arise at different times. Now we explain: This text is based on productive and non-productive causes. Productive causes are causes like the seed producing the sprout, explaining simultaneity; if one does not say productive cause, then it is at a different time. Here, calling it an establishing cause means it is an empowering condition (adhipati-pratyaya), not a directly productive causal condition (hetu-pratyaya); what is to prevent the cause and effect of an empowering condition from arising simultaneously? Hence the text below states that even if one has one's own seed, without this support, consciousness would not arise. Its productive cause is indeterminate, because seeds producing seeds occur at different times. As in the preceding fifth fascicle of the *Maulī Bhūmi*, if it arises from a homogeneous, different thought-moment, it does not at that very moment produce an actualized, heterogeneous state; hence they arise simultaneously. Master Jayasena's explanation of these seven meanings of seeds and the text on simultaneous seeds is as distinguished under the four characteristics. Here, the Sautrāntikas hold that cause and effect arise [at different] times; the *Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya* details their objections extensively, as in the three rescues.
