The treatise says: 'To reveal the meaning of experiencing objects through internal doors, six faculties are established; to reveal the meaning of experiencing through external doors, two faculties are established': this means that the six faculties of the eye, etc., do not rely on another person as a condition, but self-experience objects, which is called internal doors; the two faculties [of masculinity and femininity] rely on another to make use of objects, which is called doors. 'To clearly reveal the meaning of sentient beings' merits and faults, eight faculties are established': this means that the three undefiled ones, and among the five [faculties] of faith, etc., are the aids to liberation (mokṣabhāgīya), which are merits; the five [faculties] of faith, etc., are the aids to merit (puṇyabhāgīya), and the defiled ones are faults. Alternatively, merits refers to the eight faculties; faults refers to what is severed by the eight faculties.
