Regarding the treatise's statement, 'The suffering faculty and the seven physical faculties, when existing in the past, do not have the past as their object': The Master of the Dharma says that when these eight faculties are in the future or past, they each have an object existing in their own respective temporal period; yet the reason it says they do not is, for instance, when these eight faculties cognize an object in the present, while this faculty is in the present, the object enters the past; when this eye faculty in the second moment, following the object, also enters the past, it is called past, but it does not have the past as its object. However, those that cognize concurrently in the present enter the past together, and in the past they also cognize the past. The present explanation is: for instance, a non-physical faculty in the present generally cognizes across the three time periods; when in the past or future periods, in terms of object, it is said that each cognizes objects of the three periods. Because the eight [faculties] such as suffering, while in the present, cognize exclusively the present, if one hypothetically assumes that when flowing into the past their force is weak, and when in the future, etc., it is not said that they cognize their own respective temporal period, as explained before. Why is it that when the faculty and object are together in the present, the cognitive faculty remains in the present while the object first enters the past? The exposition states: The present sense-datum of color-form enters the past first, the future eye enters the present, and once the present eye faculty has entered the past, it cannot cognize the past. Furthermore, a present faculty devoid of consciousness enters the past together with color-form, and cannot cognize a past object.
