"Eight obtained from prior afflictions" refers to the seven material [roots] and life. Mind is one, conditioned by name-and-form, because it is the sixth of the six āyatanas. Conditioned by contact: the five sensations. The eight wholesome [roots] beginning with faith are conditioned by vigor. The seven material [roots] and life should be guarded. Mind is one, and should be calmed. The five sensations should be stilled. The eight wholesome [roots] beginning with faith are subdued by nature.
