As for "Furthermore, consciousness is capable of discerning the general characteristic of things," etc.: the Cheng Weishi Lun says: "The primary mind apprehends only the general characteristic of the cognitive object; the mental factors also apprehend its particular characteristics, assisting and completing the function of the mind, and thus obtain the name 'mental factors'—just as a master painter and his apprentice make the outline and fill in the colors." The primary mind cannot apprehend the particular characteristics of an object, but apprehends only the general object; mental factors not only apprehend the general characteristic of the object, but also apprehend its appropriate particular characteristics on that object. Therefore, it is said here: "that which has not yet been discerned on this [object]," etc. The Weishi explains: This statement expresses that the mental factors also apprehend the general characteristic of the object, [as well as] the particular characteristics of the object not yet discerned upon this general object.
