Second, under the locations, there are distinctions of the three realms, which thus form three parts. There are thirty-six locations in the Kāmadhātu, namely: the eight hot and eight cold narakas, the place of pretas, the place of asuras, the four great continents, the eight intermediate continents, and the six deva realms of the Kāmadhātu. The palace of Māra is the Paranirmitavaśavartin heaven. The solitary and border narakas are subsumed under the eight cold and eight hot according to circumstance; a portion among humans is also like this, so no separate location is established. Thus the text on the Kāmadhātu is divided into two: first, it clarifies the basic thirty-six locations; from 'the palace of Māra' downward, it explains that they are subsumed under them.
