"The Varṣagaṇya non-Buddhists" refers to the great disciples of the Sāṃkhya masters, chiefs of the eighteen sub-schools. Because [their founder] was born during the rainy season, he was named Varṣa ("Rain"); his followers are called the gaṇya ("community/assembly"). They posit that all phenomena are summarized as three, moderately as four, and extensively as twenty-five principles. Excluding the principle of the spiritual self (puruṣa), the middle twenty-three principles are called effects, and the primordial nature (prakṛti) is called the cause. The effect resides within the cause and yet has no separate substantial entity—just as when gold becomes a hairpin or earring, cause and effect differ in their characteristics, yet there is no separate substantial entity; this is called the effect being present in the cause. This is explained as in the Commentary on the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi and the Sāṃkhyakārikā-bhāṣya (Golden Seventy Treatise).
