11. Regarding "Because what sort of ignorance does not exist: there are three kinds: initiating, entangling, and dormant (anuśaya) ignorance": 'initiating' refers to ignorance that initiates karma, which extends to both associated (saṃprayukta) and unshared (āveṇikī); 'entangling' refers to ignorance that moistens rebirth, which mostly is only associated. Both of these are active manifestations (samudācāra); when they perfuse to form seeds, they are called 'dormant ignorance'. Because the ignorance that initiates karmic formations takes all ignorance as its root, the ignorance that moistens rebirth is also included here in a general sense. Furthermore, formations correspond to the existence-constituent, and ignorance corresponds to craving and grasping; therefore it is spoken of generally here. Furthermore, among these three kinds, 'initiating' is general, and within this there are two: entangling and dormant; discussing the general and the particular together, they are therefore called three kinds. The essential nature of what is initiated comprises associated and unshared—namely, the four taken as three. Because these three are eliminated in general, that particular ignorance that initiates formations is eliminated; because that is eliminated, formations are eliminated. This explanation generally accounts for the ignorance that initiates all formations. Were it not so, if the ignorance that moistens rebirth were not yet eliminated, why would that which initiates formations be eliminated at once? Furthermore, there are three kinds of dormant ignorance that initiate entanglements: first, that capable of initiating entanglements; second, that capable of initiating the associated; third, that capable of initiating the unshared. All three of these are entanglements: the first entanglement is general, and the latter two are particular; therefore the dormant ignorances that initiate these active manifestations are three. Because these three dormant ignorances are eliminated, that active ignorance is eliminated; because active ignorance is eliminated, formations are eliminated.
