Among formations, "having been done within one's own continuity and not yet perished" refers to mental formations. "Furthermore, due to mental formations, physical and verbal formations are aroused" refers to the two formations of body and speech. Due to these three formations, consciousness exists. "Because that is absent, consciousness conditioning it is also absent," and so forth, means that seed-consciousness takes formations as condition; because formations are absent, seed-consciousness is absent. If formations are entirely absent, that consciousness is also absent. Or, because this seed-consciousness is entirely absent, active consciousness is also absent.
