12. Regarding "the first seven are called dharmas having causes, while the remaining ones are mutually called suffering having causes": both the projector and the projected are projecting causes. Future birth and aging-and-death are called having causes because the seven branches are their causal dharmas. Birth and aging-and-death are called suffering having causes because they possess those preceding causes. The three—craving, grasping, and becoming—are adjacent to these two and are classified with them as suffering because they possess the preceding dharmas of projecting causes. The Abhidharma[-samuccaya] states: "At the time of the cause, there are the projector and the projected; at the time of the fruit, there are the producer and the produced." Maturation and transformation is called fruit; hence, craving, grasping, and becoming are also designated as fruits. They arise only when the fruit is on the verge of maturation and transformation, and this is likewise the case here.
