"In order to reveal the meaning of defilement and purification subsumed under causes and conditions": the tenth fascicle below states that among the twelve links, four are solely defilements, while the rest are open to purification. When those four defilements initiate and moisten, the pure retinues of wholesome karma are also called pure. The intention is to show that the class of dependently arisen factors belonging to the path of love (approaching liberation) is called pure, while the class of dependently arisen factors not belonging to the path of love is called defiled. To show that these causes and conditions constitute defiled and pure dependent origination, dependent origination is established. This explains the purpose of expounding dependent origination; hence, in the course of explaining its meaning and refuting other traditions, the text reveals its own doctrinal intention.
