Eighth, regarding the samādhi of the five noble branches: each of the noble concentrations in the four dhyānas is one, making four; all noble concentrations that carefully contemplate, establish, and sever the fetters constitute the fifth branch. In the *Satyasiddhi-śāstra*, the four dhyānas are combined into three branches: the first and second dhyānas, having the same characteristic of joy, constitute one branch; the third dhyāna, by being free from joy and having bliss, constitutes one branch; the fourth dhyāna, with a purified mind, constitutes one branch. Relying on these three branches, one can generate the appearance of illumination and the appearance of contemplation; these appearances of illumination and contemplation serve as causes that can shatter the five aggregates. Contemplating the five aggregates as empty is called the appearance of contemplation. This refers to distinctly giving rise to the contemplations of the emptiness of persons and phenomena based on the four concentrations, which are divided into two branches. These five contemplations can lead to nirvāṇa, and are called ‘noble.’ The text is divided into three: first, listing the five branches and generally citing the sūtra; second, separately listing the five branches with sūtra explanations; third, questions and answers on the concentration characteristics of the five branches.
