Within the first, there are three [parts]: first, indicating the four renunciations; next, explaining the sūtra on renunciation; and finally, discrimination through questions and answers. Renunciation has three meanings: first, the meaning of non-occurrence; second, the meaning of extinguishing dauṣṭhulya; and third, the meaning of being freed from defilement. The first dhyāna's renunciation of grief has these three meanings. The second dhyāna's renunciation of suffering has only the meaning of extinguishing dauṣṭhulya, because defilement was already abandoned in the first [dhyāna], yet [suffering] still occurs later. The latter three renunciations possess both the extinction of dauṣṭhulya and the meaning of being freed from defilement. The signless renunciation of equanimity strictly requires the stage of non-learning (aśaikṣa); in other stages, being a partial renunciation, it does not obtain the name of renunciation.
