Regarding these four kinds of meditative absorption: first, explaining their aspects, as in the text. / Second, explaining their nature: they are solely contaminated wholesome. / Third, regarding their reliant grounds: they encompass the form and formless realms, because the peak of existence (bhavāgra) can also generate an uncontaminated mind. However, by principle, the higher seven preliminary stages (sāmantaka) do not have the fourth division, because they are not seen to enter and emerge reciprocally with uncontaminated minds. It is not so at initial arising, but subsequent arising is possible; hence all possess the four divisions, as there is no textual refutation. / Fourth, the first can generate two: itself and the abiding division. The abiding division generates three, excluding the fourth; the third also generates three, excluding the division of degeneration; the fourth generates one, namely its own class. / Fifth, showing the distinction of classes: that which accords with degeneration accords with defilements; the abiding division accords with its own ground; that which accords with advancement accords with higher grounds; that which accords with definitive discrimination accords with the uncontaminated. / Sixth, regarding their occurrence: in the lower realm all four arise; in the upper two realms there are only three, lacking the first, because there is no degeneration.
