Fourth, general assessment, which has three parts: first, explaining the sequence of vimokṣa, abhibhvāyatana, and kṛtsnāyatana; next, explaining the functions of the kṛtsnāyatanas; finally, illustrating the sequence of the three dharmas through similes. These sequences have roughly three meanings: 1. The approach conforming to conventional reasoning, which is this very section. 2. The approach based on ultimate reality. The sixty-third [fascicle] states: The abhibhvāyatanas and kṛtsnāyatanas are the path that can purify the vimokṣas. The fourth fascicle of the Prakaraṇāryavācā states: One should know that because the abhibhvāyatanas master the objects, and because the kṛtsnāyatanas make the objects all-pervading, they can make the vimokṣas pure. The second [meaning] says: Within ultimate reality, first is the gate of initial cultivation, which is this text; second is the gate of subsequent fulfillment, which is the remaining text. The third [meaning] says: First is the gate of cultivation based on knowledge of quantity (yāvadbhāvikatā), which is this text; second is the gate of cultivation based on knowledge of real nature (yathāvadbhāvikatā), which is the remaining text. Having first generated superior knowing and seeing based on conventional knowledge, one then enters the kṛtsnāyatanas and vimokṣas based on knowledge of real nature.
"Resolute intention abhijñā" means that whatever one resolutely intends is entirely realized, such as conceiving the distant as near, or reaching Akaniṣṭha within the time of bending and extending an arm.
"Transformation abhijñā" means changing a previous form to make a different appearance. Furthermore, resolute intention abhijñā is mental intention and contemplation; transformation abhijñā can accomplish actual physical tasks.
