In the subsequent explanation of that sūtra, the text is divided into three: first, explaining "neither depressed nor elated"; second, explaining the expedient means and the fruit of the expedient means; third, explaining the clear comprehension and the merits of clear comprehension. "Because adverse and agreeable signs are not associated [with it]": when focusing on an adverse object, the mind is depressed; when focusing on an agreeable object, the mind is elated. Now, being free of these two signs, it is called neither depressed nor elated. Furthermore, destroying conventional truth and conflicting with worldly objects is called depressed; holding to the existence of a grasping mind and according with the real object is called elated. The signless practice is free of both, so it is called neither depressed nor elated. This not destroying conventional truth means not reflecting on any signs, not abhorring, not destroying, and so forth, which is called not depressed; correctly reflecting on the signless realm, not according with stubborn grasping, is called not elated.
