The treatise says: "If one attends to and contemplates lividity and the like, one purifies the mind regarding greed for varṇa-rūpa. If one attends to and contemplates turning red, one purifies the mind regarding greed for saṃsthāna-rūpa." The commentary states: Greed for the colors white and red is countered by lividity and the like. Greed arising toward saṃsthāna-rūpa such as long, short, square, or round is countered by removing the skin and flesh. In the Hīnayāna explanation of the characteristic of turning red, a corpse is initially livid and later red, turning into a body of red blood to eliminate greed for shape. The Mahāyāna explains: First, the color of skin, flesh, and so forth is red, and removing the shape of the skin and flesh is called "turning red"—that is, what transforms is red.
