8.29

論「我於過去，為曾何有？云何曾有」，此中二思：一、思過去曾有何法；二、思過去之法從何而來。即初問法體，後問法用。過去既然，二世准此。

The treatise says, "What was I formerly in the past? How was I formerly?": Here there are two reflections: first, reflecting on what dharmas formerly existed in the past; second, reflecting on where the dharmas of the past came from. That is, the first asks about the substance of dharmas, and the second asks about the function of dharmas. Since this is so for the past, the other two times follow this.
