Where the treatise explains discursive inquiry into the coarse category, saying, “like a skeleton, like congealed blood and flesh, like a grass torch, like a portion of charcoal fire,” and so forth: herein, “like a skeleton” means loathsome; “like congealed blood and flesh” means unreal and repulsive; “like a grass torch” means extinguishing in an instant; “like a small portion of fire” can burn mountains and marshes, so a small amount of desires can burn roots of goodness. Furthermore, it says: like charcoal where one part has fire and one part has no fire, it is repulsive. This meaning is not so. The first two manaskāras do not speak of severing afflictions, because the third, the manaskāra of detachment, can sever afflictions.
