The treatise says: 'What is called support? It refers to the bodhisattvas' gotra of their own vehicle, and so forth, up to: this is called support.' Explanation: This briefly questions and answers regarding the names of the three supports. From 'For what reason' below, it extensively explains these three supports. Regarding these three kinds of support, it is recorded: In the West there are two accounts. One account holds that the support of gotra, as the bodhisattva Candragomin takes it, is the beginningless naturally existing seed, which is prior to the ten faiths; the support of generating the aspiration is all generating of the aspiration from the ten faiths onward; the support of the factors conducive to awakening is the phenomena practiced from the ten faiths onward. Bodhisattva Dharmapāla's doctrinal stance is identical to this. In Master Jayasena's doctrine there is a slight difference. What is the slight difference? It is that the support of gotra refers to the sense of the beginningless severability of the nature of the cognitive obscuration, which is stated to be gotra; that is, the presence of untainted seeds at the point where it is conceptually severable. The support of generating the aspiration takes the tainted wisdoms born of hearing, thinking, and so forth at the time of the ten faiths. The factors conducive to awakening are identical in meaning to the former.
