The treatise states, 'What is the suffering of the five clinging-aggregates? It should be known that this suffering is also due to five aspects: namely, being a vessel of the suffering of birth, being based on the vessel of the suffering of birth': this means that based on this, the suffering of birth is able to arise. Because it is a vessel of the suffering of birth, it says 'being a vessel of the suffering of birth'. Arising based on the remaining six sufferings—namely, the suffering of old age and the rest—is collectively named 'being based on the vessel of the suffering of birth'; because suffering arises based on this vessel, it says 'being based on the vessel of the suffering of birth'. Or, this is the vessel of the suffering of birth, and the remaining six sufferings arise based on the vessel of the suffering of birth, so it is called 'a vessel of the suffering of birth'. The remaining six exist based on the suffering of birth, so this takes the suffering of birth as a vessel; spoken of together, it is called 'being a vessel of the suffering of birth'. Or, the first is the suffering of birth, and the second is the vessel that produces all sufferings; spoken of together, both are called 'being based on the vessel of the suffering of birth'.
