Regarding “Karma of determinate fruition and karma of indeterminate fruition”: The former is the aforementioned intentional karma, which will definitely incur retribution; the latter is the aforementioned unintentional karma, which will not definitely incur retribution. The Abhidharma-samuccaya states that with regard to karma of determinate fruition, determinacy is threefold: (1) determinate performance of karma—owing to the power of past karma, one obtains a determinate body, and in this life one must perform this karma, being temporally determined so that one ultimately does not fail to do so, nor can the supernatural power of the Buddhas and others prevent it; (2) determinate undergoing of retribution—this is the karma of determinate fruition spoken of here, where the fruit is bound to be experienced, although the time is not yet determined; (3) determinate stage—meaning karma whose stage is determinate as to whether it is experienced in the present life, in the next life, or in subsequent lives. Here the meaning indicated is that if a karma is subsumed under a path of karma, it is termed karma of determinate fruition; preliminary and subsequent actions may be either determinate or indeterminate. If not yet repented and not yet liberated, it is called determinate karma; if already repented and already liberated, it is called indeterminate karma.
