'Equivalent category of an act of immediate retribution' refers to sins of the same kind as an act of immediate retribution. Defiling an arhat nun and one's mother belong to the class of killing a mother; striking a bodhisattva in their final existence belongs to the class of killing a father; committing murder in a heavenly temple and the like, doing harm to a trusted person, or turning around to harm and afflict the poor, suffering, and distressed after having bestowed fearlessness upon them, belong to the class of killing an arhat; pillaging the property of the Saṅgha belongs to the class of creating a schism in the Saṅgha; destroying sacred shrines and the like belongs to the class of shedding a Buddha's body blood. Or they may simply be subsumed into categories as a whole without needing specific distribution. The *Kośa* differs from this, stating: 'Defiling one's mother who is an aśaikṣa nun, killing a bodhisattva abiding in certainty, as well as an ārya of the training stage (śaikṣa), robbing the conditions of concordance in the Saṅgha, and destroying a stūpa, are equivalents of immediate retribution.' From practicing the karma for the excellent marks, one is called a bodhisattva abiding in certainty; in that text, such a one can be killed, but here there is no such thing. Since a bodhisattva in their final body definitely cannot be killed, here it is called 'striking.' Although killing an ārya of the training stage is reversing the flow, the categorization is not exhaustive; it merely belongs to the class of killing an arhat here, subsumed under the second of the three meanings, being categorized under the class of the venerable elders.
