Regarding "error at the time of regression in samādhi": cultivating advancement in the undefiled and heading toward regression in the defiled is called error. In the latter two, taking regression to be regression is called non-error. The first takes actual regression in defiled concentration to be regression; the second takes regression from the defiled in undefiled concentration to be regression. In taking regression to be regression in defiled concentration, the text has three occurrences: first, regression due to attachment to taste; second, regression due to conceit and depreciation; third, regression due to greed and deceit. Regarding "the second non-error should be known in its marks as the reverse of the first non-error": when one attains undefiled concentration and is about to lose defiled concentration, knowing regression as it truly is is called non-error. The third non-error is knowing regression at the time of regression. The fourth non-error is knowing defiled regression when the undefiled advances. Here, the distinction between the fourth and the preceding second is that previously, in the expedient stage of cultivating the undefiled, one had not yet realized it and took it to be regression from previously attained concentration; now, in the fourth, one actually attains the undefiled and the defiled does not operate, which is called regression: thus the distinction is made.
