Regarding "innately pure": this clarifies the substance of prajñā arisen from reflection; it excludes innate goodness, and is therefore called "pure." "Reflecting upon the knowable": reflecting upon all phenomena that ought to be known. "Reflecting upon the teachings (dharmas)": reflecting upon the essential doctrinal meanings of the Buddha's sūtras in prose and verse. "Distancing oneself completely from all inconceivable domains": this refers to the unanswerable points (avyākṛtavastu) and the domains realized in the various stages that are not within one's own sphere. "Being able to properly understand dark teachings and great teachings": the heterodox doctrines of non-Buddhists and various evil teachings are called "dark teachings"; the correct doctrines of the Buddhist teaching and various good teachings are called "great teachings." Regarding "generating only faith and understanding toward a fraction of the Dharma," and so forth: this means that toward points that are not in one's own sphere and of which one has little understanding, it is called a fraction of the Dharma; one should merely have faith and understanding, for one must not slander them. If it is a teaching of which one has some understanding within one's own sphere, one should investigate it with wisdom.
