As for "Śrāvakabhūmi, the thirteenth: The first yogasthāna, the Gotrabhūmi, the first": among the seventeen bhūmis, the Śrāvakabhūmi is the thirteenth, which distinguishes what came before and introduces what follows. "The first yogasthāna" and so forth distinguishes [it from] the other two vehicles, because all three vehicles have a first yogasthāna. Yoga has four differences, and this is the very first, hence it says "first". Yoga is contemplative practice; gotra is the seed of contemplative practice; and the seed can serve as the support for active contemplative practice, hence it says "First Yogasthāna, Gotrabhūmi". In this first yoga there are four bhūmis, therefore the subsequent verse says: "Gotra and so forth are one, worldly and transworldly." The name of the Gotrabhūmi comes first. As for "gotra and so forth": within gotra there are four kinds, namely: intrinsic nature, establishment, characteristics, and pudgala. Because this gotra has four differences, it says "gotra and so forth".
