述曰：釋識名義。今舉行相，顯識自體，心、意、識、了，名之差別，故以了別釋識之義。

The Commentary states: This explains the name and meaning of 'consciousness'. Here, by citing the cognitive mode (ākāra), the intrinsic substance of consciousness is revealed. Citta, manas, vijñāna, and vijñapti are differences in designation; therefore, consciousness is explained by the meaning of 'discernment'.
