The Commentary states: Due to the force of illness and dreaming, failing to understand what is real and what is unreal, they consequently cling to what is seen as really existent. This analogy illustrates the sentient beings mentioned above. In the treatise text below, Dharmapāla explains: As with the dependent nature, foolish worldlings do not understand that this is their own mind, and taking it as a cognitive object, they cling to it as really existent external objects. The external objects are precisely the imagined nature. What was transformed previously is the dependent nature and can be said not to be nonexistent; if one clings to it as a real substance, that nature does not exist. Thus the two natures are explained, one as existent and one as nonexistent. This is directed against the Sautrāntikas, with three explanations as before.
