The Commentary states: According to the first and second sections, from here below is the second [part], which generally explains the three lines. Below there are three passages: first, to reveal the reason why both self and dharmas are nominal; second, to refute the clinging to addition and reduction; third, subsumption under the two truths. By inference from the meaning, one can know that it is based on the second and third sections. From here below is the second, explaining the reason why both natures are nominal and refuting the clinging to addition and reduction. Here, it first recounts that the substance of dharmas does not exist. The text below represents only the two explanations of Nanda and Dharmapāla; there is no explanation of Sthiramati, because [for Sthiramati] there are no self and dharmas transformed by internal consciousness. By inference from the two positions of Dharmapāla and Nanda, it is explained: what foolish worldlings falsely cling to—real self and real dharmas—is entirely nonexistent, because these exist only in imagination, and in principle are entirely nonexistent. If so, why were they spoken of before as nominal?
