述曰：即初問也，多護法文。外道、小乘聞說唯識，外道等曰：有作、有受，我體寧無；有礙、有緣，寧無法體。小乘等曰：士夫用有，何為我無？依、緣積聚色等是有，得等成就，行蘊非無。聖說無為，寧撥無法，豈離識時，便無外境，云何知識似外境生？

The Commentary states: This is the first general questioning; it mostly consists of Dharmapāla's words. Non-Buddhists and Hīnayānists, hearing vijñapti-mātra spoken of, [objected]. The non-Buddhists and others said: "There are agency and experiencing; how could the substantial entity of a self be nonexistent? There is resistance and there are cognitive conditions; how could the substantial entity of dharmas be nonexistent?" Hīnayānists and others said: "Purusa-kāra (human agency) exists; why should the self be nonexistent? Rūpa and the like, as agglomerations of supports and conditions, do exist; through the acquisition (prāpti) and so forth being accomplished, the saṃskāra-skandha is not nonexistent. The Sage has taught the unconditioned; how could one reject and negate the existence of dharmas? How could it be that when one is apart from consciousness, external objects cease to exist? How is it known that consciousness arises resembling external objects?"
