The Commentary states: This again rebukes them: when Devadatta is liberated, the others should also be likewise, because the creation of karma, the experiencing of the fruit, and the distinct bodies are united with all selves, and the dharmas cultivated and realized are united with both this and that self. Therefore, one cannot say that they belong only to this self and not to that self, such that one person is liberated while the others are not. The inference is: When Devadatta, as one person, is liberated, all the remaining unliberated persons should be liberated; because the dharmas cultivated and realized are united with all selves; just like the Devadatta who is already liberated. 'That which is cultivated' is practice; 'that which is realized' is principle. This refutes the first view. In the text there are ten and three inferences respectively. Furthermore, using karma, fruit, and body as the reason (hetu) to refute the thesis (pakṣa) of liberation can also form an inference.
