The Commentary states: From here on, [the text] refutes the remaining four aggregates. 'Not constantly continuous' means having interruptions. 'Depending on multiple conditions' means arising based on conditions. The formal inference (anumāna) is: Mind and mental factors are also not a real self; because they are not constantly continuous, and because they depend on multiple conditions; like a lamp or a sound. Since there are two reasons (hetu) here, there are also two formal inferences. The four aggregates are not matter, and their nature and category are the same, so they are combined into one syllogism for refutation. Or, just like the aggregate of form (rūpa-skandha), they can also be refuted separately. This refutes positing an aggregate as a real self; positing a nominal self is not ruled out here. The previous refutation of mental factors was a small part of the aggregate of conditioning factors (saṃskāra-skandha); among the small part of the saṃskāra-skandha, the non-associated conditioning factors (citta-viprayukta-saṃskāra) are different from mental factors, so they should be refuted separately.
