The Commentary states: 'Awareness' means conscious apprehension. It is the general name for mind and mental factors. The remaining conditioning factors apart from the mental factors, external sense-bases (āyatana), and unmanifest form (avijñapti-rūpa) are also not a real self; because they are not of the nature of awareness; like empty space and so on. Here, they are merely combined into a single inference, but making separate inferences for conditioning factors, form, and so on is logically not precluded either. The method of hetuvidyā is to debate by excluding the other: saying 'not of the nature of awareness' is not meant to turn around and imply that because the nature of mind and mental factors is awareness, they are accepted as a real self. This additionally precludes hypothetical positings; it does not require that there must actually be such an attachment. Combining these yields seven formal inferences that refute the first positing.
