The Commentary states: This refutes their self being the cognitive object of the self-view. The formal inference is: The self-view that cognizes the self should not be an inverted view; because it knows as it truly is, and because it accords with its cognitive object; like the mind cognizing form and so on. The teachings believed by the non-Buddhists and Hīnayāna who hold to a self all accept that the self-view, though according with its cognitive object, is inverted in nature, and that abandoning it makes one a noble one. The mind free from a self, although not conforming to the [purported] object, opposes defilement, hence it is called non-inverted. Just as cognizing true reality and forming an understanding that there is tathatā is dharmagrāha; if one forms an understanding of non-existence, although it does not conform to tathatā, it still causes one to become a noble one.
