The Commentary states: Here below is the fifth, hypothesising an external challenge to resolve various objections. Under a three-part outline, it is the third text. Herein the objection states: If there is no real self, who can remember things previously experienced, can also understand all objects, recite and uphold scriptures and treatises, review texts and histories, grant kindness to that one, work harm to this one, greedily love this wealth, become angry at that object, and perform all kinds of activities? The Vātsīputrīya self can also remember; they question together with the outsiders. One should establish the syllogism: 'All sentient beings should lack memory, recognition, and the like; because of the absence of a self; like empty space.' Below, resolving the opponent's defenses, there are three questions and answers. The first text has five parts, and the textual structure is understandable. In the reply, the author of the Treatise initially questions them back in every case.
