述曰：論主質云：我性既常，何能生死？量云：汝我不能輪迴生死；計無生滅故；如虛空等。既非苦惱，應不能厭苦，樂求涅槃；以是常故；如空無為。既執我常，復沈生死，求趣涅槃，故彼所言常，為自害。總結彼非。

The Commentary states: The author of the Treatise challenges: Since the nature of the self is permanent, how could it undergo saṃsāra? The syllogism: 'Your self cannot transmigrate in saṃsāra; because it is imputed to be without arising and ceasing; like empty space, and the like. Since it is not suffering, it should be unable to feel aversion to suffering and gladly seek nirvāṇa; because it is permanent; like space and the unconditioned.' Since they grasp that the self is permanent, yet again sinks in saṃsāra and seeks to advance toward nirvāṇa, their statement of 'permanence' therefore continually harms themselves. This concludes their error in general.
