The Commentary states: The twenty-three principles, due to the combination of the three entities such as sattva to form their own entities, are all substantially real; they are not dharmas of destruction and annihilation, but are mere transformation, termed impermanent. Initially they are generated by transformation from primordial nature, and later when transforming and disintegrating, they return again to primordial nature. There is only concealment and manifestation, not that subsequently there is no substance; annihilation is termed impermanent. Their substance is entirely primordial nature; there is no other distinct substance; they are real, not nominal. All these are obtained by direct perception and are enjoyed by the self. This demonstrates two meanings: first, real; second, obtained by direct perception.
