The Commentary states: Second, an inference: Furthermore, each of these three possesses three marks, and together they form mahat and so forth. How can one know that the three things are distinct from one another? There is a syllogism for each of the three things. For now, we state one syllogism: Your two factors, sattva and rajas, should not be sattva and rajas; because they possess the three marks; like tamas. Alternatively: These two should just be tamas; because they have the three marks; like tamas. If so, how can one know the distinction among the three things?
