The Commentary states: Here is the general reason. It is permissible whether it is different from two, different from three, different from four or five, up to different from eight. If different from eight, there are eight separate inferences; for two, three, and so forth, they are taken according to their respective tenets. The inference is formulated: If it is outside the eight categories such as substance, it should not be of an existent nature; because you accept that it is different from substance and so forth; like absolute non-existence and so forth—'and so forth' including non-existence prior to production, and so forth. In that school, setting aside substance, the other eight categories, quality and so forth, as well as the hair of a tortoise, are all called different from substance; for the moment, absolute non-existence is taken as the example. Furthermore, taking now the eight padārthas as the subject, and using only non-existence as the homogeneous example (sādharmya-dṛṣṭānta), one further challenges them that atop the nature of existence, a further nature of existence should be posited.
