The Commentary states: This incidentally refutes substance and so forth, which is not the primary point being clarified. The inference is formulated: Substance should not be substance; because it is different from the nature of substance; like quality and action. Quality and action are formulated as inferences with respect to each other, which can be known just like substance. The text states 'like quality, action, substance, and so forth': adducing the example for substance, it means quality and action; in the example for quality, it merely adduces substance, and 'and so forth' includes the action category; and 'and so forth' includes the example for action, meaning substance and quality. In the text, the thesis and so on are phrased concisely, merely saying: 'Substance and so forth should not be substance and so forth, because they are different from the nature of substance and so forth.' Combinations of two, three, and so forth can be understood by analogy with the preceding.
