The Commentary states: You say that the nature of earth should not be the nature of earth; because it is different from earth; like fire and so forth. Fire and so forth, compared individually with one another, are also like this. Within substance, the nine types compared mutually with each other yield nine inferences; qualities have twenty-four; actions have five; totaling thirty-eight. Reversing them, there are seventy-six. If combined two by two, or three by three, they are indeed immeasurable. Formulating the second by analogy: Earth should not be earth; because it is different from the nature of earth and so forth; like fire and so forth. But does this not incur the fault of contradicting one's own school; why would one say that earth is not earth, and so on? Now, this is not so; one should say: The earth posited by you should not be real earth, qualifying it with words. Because the earth of our school is not real earth, being provisionally posited, and moreover is not the earth within the substance category. In their tenets, fire and so forth are also not the earth of the substance category, so there is no fallacy of inconclusiveness. The preceding inference should be qualified, but the text is concise.
