The Commentary states: This is the refutation. First, it contradicts inference: one must not say that all phenomena, because they are identical with the nature of being, are like the nature of being—all one, without distinction. Since you claim that substantial entities are identical with the nature of being, and as long as they are substantial entities their meaning of "being" is not different—all being "existent"—substantial entities should therefore have no distinction. Now, the syllogism is established as follows: "Your subtle elements (tanmātra) and the rest should have no distinction; because they are identical with the nature of being; like the non-nonexistence of all phenomena." The "non-nonexistence of all phenomena" is precisely the nature of being; the nature of being is entirely without distinction. Since its nature of being has no distinction, phenomena should also be likewise. Therefore, it is used as the example.
