The Commentary states: This explains the reason why only the two graspings are spoken of. In answer to the first question, it says: The categories of the affliction obstacle are manifold, and grasping at self is the root that produces all afflictions. If one does not grasp at a self, there are no afflictions; hence, upon realizing the principle of selflessness, the view of self is eliminated. Because the root is severed, the branches are also exhausted. This is spoken in terms of severing afflictions at the path of seeing (darśanamārga) and up to the ultimate stage; in other stages it is not so, because having first abandoned eight grades of afflictions, it is only at the ninth grade that the view of self is severed. In the fourth bhūmi, the view of self is also like this. As in Fascicle Nine, there are two explanations regarding the stage of equipment (sambhāramārga).
