The Commentary states: This third doctrine belongs to a class of bodhisattvas in the Mahāyāna who rely on semblance teachings and say that the essence of consciousness is one. The fourth fascicle of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha states: The bodhisattvas who advocate a single consciousness cling [to this]: First, relying on the teaching of 'faring far' and 'faring alone': wandering through various spheres, it is therefore said to 'fare far'; again, it says 'faring alone', because there is no second; second, relying on the teaching that the mind can apprehend each of the realms traversed by the five faculties; third, relying on the teaching that the six bodies of consciousness are all called the mind sense-field (manāyatana); fourth, also the teaching in the Saṃdhinirmocana, Yogācāra, and so on that says 'just as on a single mirror there are multiple images'; fifth, the analogy of 'just as on a single body of water there are multiple waves'. Fearing to contradict the ultimate teaching, they say there is only one consciousness. Some say that 'one mental consciousness' only refers to the first six consciousnesses being one mental consciousness; this is logically untenable, for this refers to the eight consciousnesses being one in essence.
