The Commentary states: Although in the stage of the path of cultivation of the ten grounds one also suppresses afflictions and severs their unserviceability, this is not the primary intention. Why is that? Because one does not sever latent dispositions, this is not mentioned. The Root Mahāyānasaṃgraha, Vasubandhu, and others state that bodhisattvas of the ten grounds retain the affliction obstacle to support vows and take rebirth; hence it is not the primary intention. The intention is directed toward wisdom to sever the cognitive obstacle, and so one severs latent dispositions, but does not sever the latent dispositions of affliction. Question: If so, why does the first ground speak only of the obstacle of ordinary-personhood, and not speak of further severing the obstacles of cultivation?
