The Commentary states: 'Superior samādhi' refers to samādhi and samāpatti, corresponding to the various dhyānas and formless, taintless concentrations. As for 'dhāraṇī', fascicle 45 [of the Yogācārabhūmi] and the Buddhabhūmi-śāstra state: its essence consists of mindfulness and discernment. Fascicle 45 states that there are four dhāraṇīs: dharma, meaning, mantra, and obtaining the bodhisattva's patience. Here, the first two are subsumed, which are the retention-through-hearing dhāraṇīs, as well as the three kinds of discernment generated by samādhi, etc. Samādhi directly generates cultivation-discernment; dhāraṇī directly generates hearing and thinking. Therefore, they are combined in the text as 'and the superior three kinds of discernment generated by them.' The three discernments have discernment as their essence. When it says 'cultivation-discernment,' it means obtaining this discernment due to cultivation, so it is called cultivation-discernment, taking its name from its cause; it does not mean cultivation itself is discernment, because cultivation is samādhi.
