The Commentary states: The Daśabhūmika says 'the obstruction of conceit regarding understanding dharmas'; the translators' terms differ, which are self-view, conceit, and so forth. Vasubandhu's Mahāyānasaṃgraha-bhāṣya says 'the active manifestation of subtle afflictions,' subsuming the innate identity-view and so forth. Because this is the lowest grade, because it is not an intentional object, and because it distantly follows active manifestation, it should be understood as subtle; the intended meaning is largely the same. Mentioning here the identity-view conjoined with the sixth consciousness excludes that conjoined with the seventh consciousness. 'And so forth' includes the extreme view of what belongs to self, as well as self-conceit and self-love that are conjoined with view, all of which belong to this grade; it also includes attachment to concentration and attachment to dharmas, which will be understood below. Why is this called 'subtle'? It is explained: because it is the lowest grade. That is to say, the sixth consciousness also has conceptually constructed dharmas such as identity-view; those are coarse and fierce, and are called the superior grade. Isolated greed and so forth in the sixth consciousness are called the middling grade, because they include the unwholesome nature. In comparison to those two, this is of the lowest grade; its mode of activity is the most subtle, being exclusively indeterminate. Furthermore, because it is not an intentional object, it is called the lowest grade; that is, because it arises spontaneously, it is called the lowest grade, not arising only after forceful deliberation as do those severed by seeing. Furthermore, because it distantly follows active manifestation, that is, following the body from beginningless time without abandoning the body, it is called the lowest grade. Unlike conceptually constructed ones, which are abandoned upon meeting a good spiritual friend, this is called the lowest grade. Due to these three meanings, it is called subtle; other treatises should be interpreted accordingly.
